The Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute (CKCI)

Over the past several years, the administration and medical staff of Schneider Regional Medidcal Center, with the support of numerous St. Thomas - St. John citizens, lobbied tirelessly to make the dream of establishing cancer care services on the island a reality. Funds were allocated in 2002 for a new beginning to establish the first comprehensive cancer institute in the Caribbean.

The result was the opening of The Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute (CKCI) in 2006 –  a new, patient centered, 24,000 square foot state-of-the-art, comprehensive cancer center. Unlike existing services at the Schneider Regional Medical Center, the Cancer Institute integrates services both geographically and organizationally by bringing together a more comprehensive range of services, radiation oncology, surgical consultations, clinical research and support services in a single, human-scale cancer institute facility.

The physicians and staff who provide these services function as an integrated, multidisciplinary team, rather than single, varying practices in multiple locations. This means more effective health care management for our cancer patients.

This is a world-class facility for cancer care includes an array of support services and resources, furthering the caring and treatment of the "whole person" while placing the patient in a position of partner with his/her physicians and caregivers throughout the care experience. Support services and resources are provided, including nutritional, psychosocial, pastoral and financial counseling, a free Patient and Family Resource Library, ample space for support groups and complementary therapies and a boutique offering a full range of products unique to the needs of those living with cancer. The Cancer Resource Library is a central feature of the new cancer institute. It provides cancer patients and their families with access to an extensive array of reliable cancer information plus assistance from a Care Coordinator for using the library to get the information they want.

It is our goal to make the best, most advanced care available to our population without leaving home. Visit their website.
